San Antonio family historians should check the calendar before carrying a research folder to Central Library. The Texana/Genealogy department has paused its interim in-person reference service from September 28 through November 14, 2026, while staff relocate collections and prepare the renovated resource center.
The library currently advertises a grand opening on Monday, November 16, on Central Library's sixth floor at 600 Soledad Street. Treat that as the announced plan and check the department's current page before making a special trip. General Central Library hours do not establish that a specialized department is available.
The collection covers San Antonio, Bexar County and Texas history alongside genealogy resources extending into North America and beyond. Books are only part of the research picture: maps, clipping files, microforms, oral histories and archival material may require a different search from the main catalog. Department materials are reference-only.
Use the pause to prepare a focused question and record which sources you have already checked. The department's online guides and South Texas Researcher newsletter can help identify a starting point. When service resumes, bring names, approximate dates and locations with their uncertainties clearly marked, giving a reference conversation something specific to build on.
